Five Ways to Improve Access to Healthcare in Medically Underserved Communities

Posted on July 18, 2025

Women and men who do not have health insurance are more than those with insurance. They also pass later in life. To stop the possibility of this happening, health insurance coverage should be increased. Additionally, everyone should be shielded from abuse by an insurance company.

Unfortunately, the fact that health insurance does not necessarily mean that a person has access to medical treatment. While it can be helpful, however, there are many things to be done to increase access to healthcare in medically underserved regions. The steps below will aid in reaching this objective.

Table of Contents

  • Doctor Shortages
  • Adequately Fund Health Insurance Programs
  • Expand Telehealth Opportunities
  • Individual Insurance Marketplaces
  • Increased Efficiency

Doctor Shortages

A lot of patients come to LifeSavers Foundation because they are unable to locate a doctor, or their primary doctor is busy, and they’re unable to make it onto the schedule. The shortages are evident in both specialty and primary areas. The steps are being taken to address this issue; however, more work is required.

For 2020, Congress has added 1000 graduate medical education jobs that are designed to aid those in need and to help hospitals that teach. These positions receive Medicare assistance, something that hasn’t been offered for more than a quarter century. Medical school loans that are forgiven are a possibility, as well as doctors from abroad need to have the barriers eliminated so that they can perform their work in America.

Adequately Fund Health Insurance Programs

The Children’s Health Insurance Program must be adequately funded so that children don’t fall into the gaps. This insurance must be in the states that have expanded Medicaid, and other states must extend their Medicaid programs.

Purchase vitamins and other supplements

Millions of Americans get Medicaid at present. Because of the Affordable Care Act, nearly 12 million people have been able to apply to this program who couldn’t. Additionally, the passage of this law resulted in the enrollment of more than 3 million people who weren’t qualified for the program registering for Medicaid.

Expand Telehealth Opportunities

The pandemic in the world has demonstrated the benefits of telehealth as well as remote monitoring. Doctors could be in contact with patients who were not able or unwilling to go to the health facility. Medical professionals quickly realized that these tools are a great tool that allows them to assist more patients, in particular those areas where there is a shortage of doctors.

Individual Insurance Marketplaces

In the present, many of the market-based insurance companies are experiencing difficulties. The programs need to be stabilized, and lawmakers should ensure that the ACA changes to market regulations are in effect. By doing this, they can ensure that all people have the opportunity to have affordable insurance. There are a variety of ways to accomplish this.

Legislators should look into allowing tax cuts for premiums that go up to 500 percent below the poverty line. Furthermore, they should give young adults additional tax credits, without having to get rid of the current tax credit structure for premiums. States must be included to find ways to help a greater number of people have the benefits of health insurance. While doing this, it is important to ensure they maintain existing protections for patients.

Lawmakers must go one step further. It’s time to create a permanent federal Reinsurance program. While doing this, they must restrict the sales of insurance plans with no protection against pre-existing medical conditions. Essential health benefits should be provided within these plans, and the patients should be protected against the annual and lifetime limits.

Increased Efficiency

Medical liability reforms can help to improve efficiency in the medical industry. This is also true to reduce regulatory burdens. This will result in improvements in the quality of care for patients while also reducing costs. Models of payment based on the physician are also worthy of consideration.

Access to healthcare for all is essential. These reforms are an excellent start. But there are many other things that a healthcare provider can do to enhance accessibility. Each healthcare organization should determine the best measures to be beneficial to them.
